(Withania somnifera) Ashwagandha is a small shrub with a rich history of traditional and medicinal use spanning thousands of years. Its roots are the prized possession of this plant. They are thick, fleshy, and have a distinct smell, somewhat reminiscent of horse sweat. Yes, that's where the name "Ashwagandha" comes from, as it translates to "the smell of a horse" in Sanskrit. Quite an intriguing name, isn't it? This powerful herb can be grown and harvested as an annual or in warmer climates can be harvested after the second season for larger roots. Sturdy stems grow quickly with silver-green ovate leaves and bear small white flowers that turn into red berries inside papery husks. Berries can be used in place of rennet in cheese making. Perennial in zones 8-12, Annual in zones 2-8.
Also known as Wolfberry, Chinese Wolfberry, Chinese Matrimony Vine, Mede Berry, Chinese Desert-thorn.
To Grow:
Start indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost. Lightly cover as light is needed for germination. Transplant after last frost to a sunny spot with well-drained, alkaline soil. If harvesting in the first year, dig up roots when the tops freeze back. In warmer zones, harvest in the fall of the second growing season.
