Our modern day sticky, sugary marshmallow treats go back to the roots of this attractive plant as it was made from the gummy mucilage of the roots since ancient times. Growing to 3-4’, this hardy perennial has attractive hibiscus shaped five-petaled pink-white flowers. Marshmallow leaves can be used fresh or dried and are wonderful in tea or salads. Leaves and roots have traditionally been used for their numerous medicinal properties. A lovely, ornamental plant in addition to its medicinal and culinary properties.
TO GROW: Sow outside in fall or up to 2-4 weeks before average last frost in spring. Start indoors by sowing seeds on top of moistened seed starting mix and place it in the refrigerator for 6 weeks, then sow outdoors after frost. Press seeds into the soil but do not cover them as they need light to germinate.
