(Leonurus cardiac) Perennial. Motherwort, also called “Mother’s Herb”, is a highly medicinal plant with ornamental light pink to purple flowers that grow along flower spikes with deeply lobed palmate leaves emerging from axels.
Benefits from cold stratification. Needs light to germinate. Attracts butterflies, birds, and bees.
To Grow:
Direct seed in late fall or start indoors in spring by sowing seeds on top of moistened seed starting mix and place it in the refrigerator for 3 weeks, then sow outdoors after frost. Press seeds into the soil but do not cover them with soil because they need light to germinate. Cold stratified seeds can also be started indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Transplant seedlings outdoors after last frost. Germination can be slow and naturally irregular. Keep moist until established.
