(Plantago major) Perennial. This is an easy-to-grow herb with many culinary and medicinal uses. The young bitter leaves can be eaten in salad or a potherb. Medicinally it is best known for making a poultice. Tea can be made from fresh or dried leaves. Plantain grows low to the ground in bright green rosettes with oval shaped, distinctly veined leaves. From Spring to Fall it blooms a single spike of tiny green to cream colored flowers, a good food source for birds. Plantain is often grown as a forage crop and grows well in most soil types.
