(Atriplex hortensis) Red Plume Orach flowers are grown as a rustic wine-red filler for floral arrangements and leaves are delicious eaten raw or cooked. Foliage has a savory, nutty flavor and can be used as a spinach substitute. Sturdy flower stems grow 12-24” long and are produced on prolific, cold hardy plants.
Orach is one of the oldest cool season crops originating in Egypt and Europe. Seeds can be used to make blue dye or crushed and added to flour for baking. Leaves are used fresh or dried in tea.
To Grow:
Direct sow in late winter to mid-spring when soil temperatures reach at least 50 degrees. Can sow in early fall for a late fall harvest. Or start seeds indoors under bright lights 4-6 weeks before your last frost.
