(Liatris Spicata) Perennial. Gayfeather gets its name from its long and feathery purple flower spikes that grow atop erect flower stalks which arise from its attractive grass-like foliage. Butterflies and bees can’t resist visiting these purple bottlebrush blooms. Gayfeather tolerates moist soil better than other Liatris and is a great choice for native and cottage gardens and prairie plantings. Makes a unique and long-lasting cut flower.
Also known as Dense Blazing Star and Prairie Feather.
Quantity: 50 Seeds
To Grow:
Direct sow in early fall, press seed into soil of well-prepared seed bed but do not cover as it needs light to germinate. Cold stratified seeds can also be started indoors under lights 6-8 weeks before last frost. To cold stratify, mix seeds with moistened seed starting mix or sand and place it in the refrigerator for 8 weeks, then press seeds into the soil but do not cover them with soil because they need light to germinate. Transplant seedlings outdoors after last frost. Water regularly.
